Switzerland and the Rhine

Basel and river cruising

rain 68 °F

Today we checked out of the Radisson Blu in Lucerne and headed for Basel, where we would tour the city and board AMACello for our trip north to Amsterdam. It was a pretty ride the 80 or so km to Basel, although showery as we passed through the mountains. Basel is a relatively big city and industrialized, but again interesting with several old churches, many museums and an upscale shopping district. This part of Switzerland is primarily Protestant and when the Catholics were forced out during the reformation, they took most of the church art and sculpture work with them. After a wonderful lunch we boarded the ship and started our journey on the Rhine.

Switzerland and the Rhine

semi-overcast 62 °F

Although there was some rain overnight, our walking tour this morning was dry and the day turned sunny and we had a nice lunch along side the river. Lucerne is a holiday paradise during the prime season with many folks from Europe and especially China, Japan and Korea coming here to enjoy the Swiss lakeside beauty. It is a very quaint town with influences from both classic Swiss and Italian architecture. After our morning tour, we did some shopping and had lunch are returned to our hotel for a nap and for me to do some work. Tomorrow, we drive to Basel where we will board AMACello for our river cruise on the Rhine to Amsterdam!

Switzerland and the Rhine

Zurich to Lucerne

sunny 73 °F

We traveled through the Swiss countryside the 60 or so Km from Zurich to Lucerne. It was a wonderful journey as the sun was shining and the weather was great. You can really get a feel for the Swiss countryside as you travel through it's center. For all of you have Swiss Army knives, we went past the factory today and I plan on buying some Christmas presents tomorrow. We passed many lakes, some of whom host the rich and famous at five start resorts and luxurious chalets. Instead of driving all the way to Lucerne we went by boat the last hour. Again, since the weather was great, it was a pleasurable experience. We will do a walking city tour tomorrow.

Switzerland and the Rhine

rain 67 °F

Today, we started our AMA Waterways experience. Our morning commenced at 0930 with a brief bus overview of the sights of the city and it's historic landmarks and then we walked through the old town and ended up on Bahnhofstrasse, which connects the rail station and the lake and is the Rodeo drive of Zurich. Zurich is home of the largest clock tower face in Europe. It is quite impressive. We left the tour at Bahnholstrasse so we could stroll the avenue as it were and grab some lunch in a wonderful cafeteria style restaurant on the fifth floor of the Manor department store. As it was lightly raining, and we forgot our umbrellas, we went back to the hotel for a nap, as we have not completely adjusted to the six hour time difference. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free, and we will head out to a local bistro for dinner.
